Dear Treasured Taradale Families,
On behalf of our Taradale Teachers and Support Staff, we are pleased to inform you that our fourth week of Ongoing Learning is available for you. Please follow the links below. The slides will guide you through the learning that is required, by Alberta Education, while classes are cancelled and the additional optional learning activities. As a Taradale School community we want to continue to inspire intellectual engagement and habits of learning during your Ongoing Learning time.

As stated by the Calgary Board of Education, school environments provide students equitable access to learning and learning resources. When learning occurs remotely, each student’s environment, capacity and access to learning resources are different. The temporary change in instructional setting limits teachers’ capacity to assess student learning. Whenever possible, the emphasis should be on formative assessment.
Formative Assessment - is information about student learning that is gathered frequently and on an ongoing basis during instruction. It is used by teachers to plan for instruction and additional assessments and to monitor student progress so teachers can provide timely and specific descriptive feedback to students. It is also used by students to monitor their own progress and to set learning goals.
Ongoing learning is not equivalent to online learning. The goal is not to re-create a robust
educational ecosystem online, but rather to provide temporary access to instruction and
instructional supports for students and families while this global health crisis continues to
impact the cancellation of classes. Any learning activities shared with students and families
will be explicitly connected to the essential outcomes that teachers have identified as the focus. As teachers plan learning activities for students to engage in remotely, they will consider what is reasonable and manageable for students and families.
Formative assessment plays a critical role when students engage in learning remotely.
Each learning activity will include success criteria that outline what the student is expected
to be able to understand and do. This will support students with self-assessment and,
particularly in earlier grades, support families to know if the student is on the right track.
Many of our students have started meeting with their teachers in their Google Meet / Hang Out scheduled times and we are hearing precious stories about these meetings. We appreciate your help and support as your children participate in these sessions.
Please know that as parents, you are doing a wonderful job! Everyone’s home situation is different right now. We are very grateful for anything and everything that you are doing.
· if you can support your child for one hour a day, that is great!
· if you can support your child for five minutes a day, that is great!
· if your child is working independently, that is great!
· if you can support your child for one hour in the week, that is great!
· we know that some parents are juggling 3, 4, and 5 children in Ongoing Learning, possibly in elementary, middle and high school
· we know that some parents are working from home as well.
· we know that some families are dealing with health concerns
· we know that some families are dealing with financial issues
So again, please know that in whatever way you are supporting your child with Ongoing Learning is great! You are AMAZING!
We are required to provide literacy and numeracy learning tasks for one hour each day. We are providing more optional learning opportunities, as a choice for you.
We do not want to overwhelm our parents.
There are many choices.
Please decide what is best for your family, right now.
Health, Family and Loved Ones come first.
We are concerned about you and your family’s well-being.
Again, from the bottom of our hearts, we continue to send our very special care to you and your families, during this unsettling time. We are so very grateful to have this opportunity to continue working with our Taradale Treasures.
Dream, Believe, Achieve
Most sincerely,
Jacki McLaren and Raun Rainbow
